Revit Support Updates in Model Derivative API

Default blog image

This blog post will share information about the supported Revit versions in the Model Derivative API. A few years ago, we announced that the Model Derivative API would no longer support Revit 2013 and 2014, as outlined in Model Derivative Updates – Revit Support Updates.

Today, we want to inform you about the latest updates on this topic.

As Revit continues to evolve and update, the newest version of this year is Revit 2026. According to the Revit Desktop support life cycle, the Revit product support range has been updated to encompass four major release versions: Revit 2023 through Revit 2026. These changes also include the support for its dependencies/components and Add-ins, e.g., Revit IFC add-in.

As a result, similar changes also affect the APS Model Derivative API, which will impact the translation of RVT files to supported formats (SVF, SVF2, DWG, IFC, etc.). However, it's different from the support of the Revit product.

In the Model Derivative API, we don't drop support for older Revit versions now. This means that the related components, including the Revit IFC add-in, for older Revit versions in the Revit translation pipeline are in maintenance mode, but we can still translate RVT files of older versions to SVF, SVF2, DWG, IFC, and other supported formats. However, we would not receive updates and fixes as frequently as the major versions if some issues related to older versions are found.

Here are the version details:

  • Older Revit versions are Revit 2016 - Revit 2022, which are in maintenance mode.
  • Major Revit versions are Revit 2023 - Revit 2026.

Note: The above version ranges follow the Revit Desktop support life cycle of the year when this blog post was written. It will be changed in the future when Revit releases a new version.

If you have an application that currently leverages older Revit versions and encounter translation issues, you will need to upgrade it to a major Revit version. For example, your application uses the Model Derivative API to export IFC from RVT files of Revit 2022, and you encountered issues. Then, please try to upgrade the RVT file to Revit 2023 or a higher version of Revit, and then submit the new translation request. Model Derivative API will use the translation pipeline of the matched major Revit version to process the translation job.
