Manufacturing Data Model API Version 2.0 is now in public beta!

At Autodesk we are making bold investments to unify data and workflows together across the entire product lifecycle. These efforts will accelerate digital transformation by reimagining product lifecycle workflows. They will streamline information access and facilitate seamless data connectivity across the entire organization, regardless of discipline or location.

Today we are thrilled to announce the public beta launch of the Manufacturing Data Model APIs V2.0. This is a significant upgrade from our initial APIs for the Manufacturing Data Model. The Manufacturing Data Model is a way to store your manufacturing design data in the cloud, making it easily accessible from anywhere. It breaks down your data into granular subsets that can be read, written, and extended using the Manufacturing Data Model APIs.

In this blog post, we will walk you through the key enhancements, improvements, and how you can be part of shaping the future of the Manufacturing Data Model APIs as we transition from Version 1 to Version 2.

A Leap Forward: What's New in API Version 2

  • Introduction of the Unified Autodesk Data Model

At Autodesk we are evolving our three industry data models i.e., the Manufacturing Data model, AEC Data Model, and M&E Data Model. We are exposing those data models through GraphQL APIs, allowing you to query your design-and-make data for each industry data model at a granular level. As these data models continue to mature, we are creating common data concepts, objects, and patterns that span our three industries – concepts like User objects, Thumbnails, Property Types, Units, and more. It is natural to bring these common objects together into a single graph of data. By bringing the three different data models together, and making them accessible, through a single GraphQL API, we make traversing your complex, multi-industry data easier, and encourage convergence and innovation through this new unified data experience.

  • Augment the Manufacturing Data Model with custom properties

You can now add metadata, process information and IDs from external systems as custom properties, modify those properties, and query the properties for their values. Custom properties will also be visible natively in various Autodesk Fusion experiences.

custom properties

  • Create/Manage property definitions globally and use them in multiple Hubs.
  • Set behavior on a property based on your use case. We support various property behaviors that allow you to simply attach values on a specific component/drawing version or update component/drawing version on property changes.
  • Use custom properties in Autodesk Fusion component property view and other navigation experiences.
  • Simplified access to Thumbnails

You can now access the thumbnail of an Autodesk Fusion component/drawing in single size via a signed URL. This improvement reduces the number of steps to display the thumbnail image in your application.

  • Export Geometry of an Autodesk Fusion Component in additional file formats such as OBJ, and STL.

You can now utilize the components exported in OBJ or STL file formats, for applications such as visualization or 3D printing.

Seamless Transition from Version 1 to Version 2

We understand that transitioning from one version to another can be a critical process. That's why we have designed a migration guide to accelerate your transition and minimize disruptions. In this section, we provide detailed guidelines on how to make the switch from API Version 1 to Version 2.

Getting Started with API Version 2

Ready to explore the capabilities of API Version 2? Our developer documentation offers step-by-step tutorials, code samples and detailed API reference documentation to jumpstart your development. Whether you are a long-time user or a newcomer, this is your opportunity to be among the first to experience the power of Manufacturing Data Model APIs V2.

What can you do with the Manufacturing Data Model APIs?

Our Manufacturing Data Model APIs empower you to revolutionize your workflows and enhance productivity.  Here are some examples of what you can achieve today:

  • Automate Repetitive Tasks: Streamline your processes by automating tasks like Bill of Materials creation. Synchronize it with your design and enrich the data with custom properties such as supplier details or costs.

  • Environmental Impact Analysis: Gain a holistic understanding of your product's environmental impact throughout the design phase. Leverage granular data like material, mass, volume, and density to analyze carbon footprint or water use. Write this valuable information back to the data model as custom properties for ongoing traceability.

  • Seamless Integration with ERP Systems: Enhance efficiency by integrating Manufacturing design and make data into ERP systems. Automate sourcing, procurement, pricing, and inventory decisions effortlessly.

  • Flexible Component Export: Export Autodesk Fusion components in various formats such as STL or OBJ for applications like visualization or 3D printing. Unleash the potential of your designs beyond the authoring application.

  • Effortless Project Administration: Utilize APIs to automate the creation of new projects within a user’s Hub or to add users to projects and Hubs, streamlining your project data management.

We are excited to see what you build with the Manufacturing Data Model APIs.

The public beta phase is not just a launch; it is an invitation to be part of our API's evolution. Your feedback is invaluable in refining and perfecting our APIs. Join our beta testing community, share your experiences, report any issues, and help us fine-tune the API to ensure it meets the diverse needs of our customer base.
