Bridging Two of Infrastructure's Most Widely Used Platforms
Infrastructure projects rarely live inside a single vendor's tools. Civil teams running Bentley OpenRoadsTM Designer and MicroStationTM regularly need to hand off design data to Autodesk-based building, structural, and coordination workflows, and until now that handoff has meant exporting to a neutral format, cleaning up geometry, and hoping nothing got lost in translation. Today, we're opening private beta access to the Data Exchange Connector for Bentley OpenRoadsTM Designer and MicroStationTM, a direct bridge between the Bentley design environment and the Autodesk Data Exchange ecosystem.
What the Connector Does

Create a Data Exchange directly from OpenRoadsTM Designer or MicroStationTM, with filtering by selection, element type, or level so teams can scope exactly what they share.

Load a Data Exchange into OpenRoadsTM Designer or MicroStationTM, bringing data authored elsewhere directly into the Bentley environment.

Update an existing exchange as the source model changes, and load the latest version of an exchange to stay current with upstream edits.
Beta Focus: Bentley - Revit
The connector works in both directions, but for this private beta the primary focus is the Bentley-to-Revit workflow: helping infrastructure teams move corridor, terrain, solid, and mesh data between OpenRoadsTM Designer to Revit, without a manual export and cleanup cycle in between. Supported element types already span lines, curves, arcs, shapes, complex chains, parametric and smart solids, terrain, corridors, mesh, and cells, with additional geometry types like surfaces and civil cells planned for a future release.
Part of a Connected Interoperability Story
This connector doesn't just connect Bentley to Autodesk. It extends the same interoperability model already proven across the Data Exchange ecosystem. Exchanges created from Civil 3D can be loaded directly into OpenRoadsTM Designer or MicroStationTM through this connector, and exchanges created from Bentley applications can flow onward into Revit, Navisworks and Tekla, both already generally available. That means infrastructure and building teams running Civil 3D, Bentley, Revit, and Tekla side by side finally have one connected path for their data, instead of four separate ones.
What This Means for Infrastructure Teams
Mixed-vendor environments are the norm in infrastructure delivery, not the exception. This connector removes one of the most persistent friction points in that reality: getting civil design data out of Bentley tools and into the Autodesk-based workflows that downstream teams depend on, without losing geometry fidelity or spending hours on file translation. It's an early step, but it points toward a future where the tool a team prefers doesn't dictate who they can collaborate with.
