Webinar: From BIM to AR - Bringing Data Exchange to Life with inCitu

Autodesk Data Exchange is best known for its growing ecosystem of ready-to-use connectors - including Revit, IFC, Tekla Structures, Rhino, Inventor, and Power BI, with more currently in Beta. These connectors make it easy to move data across tools and improve interoperability across the AEC landscape. But Data Exchange is not just about ready-to-use connectors.

With its continuously evolving .NET SDK, Data Exchange provides a powerful foundation for building custom integrations and entirely new workflows. For developers and innovators, this highlights a key opportunity: building on top of Data Exchange to create scalable, connected workflows that extend beyond traditional BIM use cases.

inCitu brings a new dimension to BIM workflows by enabling real-time, full-scale augmented reality experiences directly on mobile devices. By integrating with Data Exchange, inCitu introduces a public- and stakeholder-facing interface that extends beyond traditional coordination environments into contextual, street-level engagement.

This shift unlocks new possibilities for how design intent is communicated โ€“ making projects more accessible, intuitive, and immersive for a broader audience.

Urban planning projects such as housing developments, transit corridors, and infrastructure investments are complex to design and even harder to communicate. AEC teams spend months building detailed models, but decisions that shape cities often get made in rooms where not everyone shares the same spatial frame of reference. As one planner put it: people can imagine flooding clearly. They struggle to picture the solutions in their own backyards. On April 23rd, 3-4 pm GMT / 4-5 pm CET / 10-11am EST, we are hosting a live webinar with inCitu to show what it looks like when that gap closes.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ What we'll cover

inCituAR for Data Exchange is a new integration available on the Autodesk App Store that connects Autodesk Data Exchange directly to the inCituARยฎ platform. It lets AEC teams take a curated Revit model - published through Autodesk Forma - and place it at real-world coordinates as a georeferenced AR experience, accessible from any smartphone via a QR code, with no app download required.

The webinar will walk through the full workflow from Revit to AR, show how the Data Exchange integration works in practice, and cover what on-site community engagement with AR looks like from the ground up. We'll share real examples from Phoenix, Columbus, Tampa Bay, and Kauai - planners, communicators, and public servants that have used inCitu to let residents preview proposals at full scale, in the actual locations where they'll be built.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ Why it matters

Getting a model into AR has historically required significant manual work: exporting files, converting formats, managing versions across tools. Autodesk Data Exchange changes that by publishing a live, structured dataset directly from Forma. The inCituDX integration connects to that dataset and generates an AR-ready project in minutes. When the design changes, updating the Data Exchange pushes those changes through, no rebuilding from scratch.

The result is a faster path from model to community, and a more credible one. When residents can see a proposed housing development from the sidewalk at real scale, or walk a proposed BRT corridor and see transit-oriented development appear on their phones at each stop, the conversation shifts from abstract to concrete. That shift matters, for project momentum, for public trust, and for the communities living in the places being planned.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ Who should join

This session is for AEC practitioners, planners, and engagement professionals who are working on projects that require public communication โ€” housing, transit, infrastructure, climate resilience โ€” and want to understand how AR fits into a modern Autodesk workflow.

Whether you're new to AR or already exploring spatial engagement tools, the session is designed to be practical and hands-on.
