Connecting BIM, 4D and 5D Workflows using Data Exchange with Power BI

Join us for an upcoming Data Exchange Webinar on May 19th, where we’ll explore how to build interactive Power BI dashboards using Autodesk Data Exchange - combining BIM data with 4D scheduling and 5D cost insights to create a more connected project experience.

As BIM workflows continue to evolve, project teams are increasingly looking for ways to make model data more accessible, understandable, and actionable - not only for BIM specialists, but for the entire project team. By connecting Data Exchanges with Power BI, teams can transform complex project information into intuitive dashboards that support better decision-making across design, construction, and project management workflows.

In this webinar, we’ll walk through a practical workflow demonstrating how Data Exchange and the Power BI Connector can be used to create rich, interactive dashboards. This workflow helps bridge the gap between BIM authoring environments and business intelligence tools, making project information more accessible to a wider audience. BIM data becomes even more powerful when combined with external project information. During the webinar, we’ll demonstrate how to map and connect additional datasets - such as scheduling, cost, procurement, or project status information - to elements within a Data Exchange. This creates a unified view of project data that supports more informed project monitoring and reporting.

Exploring 4D, 5D Dashboards

A key focus of this session will be the integration of 4D and 5D workflows into Power BI dashboards:

  • 4D BIM adds the dimension of time to the model by linking project elements to scheduling information. This allows teams to visualise construction sequences, track progress, and better understand project timelines.
  • 5D BIM extends the workflow further by connecting cost information to model elements and schedules. This enables teams to analyse project budgets, quantities, procurement status, and financial impacts alongside design and construction data.

Why This Matters

One of the biggest challenges in BIM workflows is making project data understandable and usable for everyone involved in a project - not only BIM managers or technical specialists.
Interactive Power BI dashboards powered by Data Exchange make it possible to:

  • Share project insights with non-BIM stakeholders
  • Improve transparency across teams
  • Support data-driven decision-making
  • Reduce manual reporting efforts
  • Create scalable and reusable reporting workflows

This approach enables project teams to move beyond static reports and disconnected spreadsheets toward a more connected digital project ecosystem.
Whether you are already using Power BI or just starting to explore data-driven BIM workflows, this session will provide practical insights and real-world examples you can apply to your own projects.
