The Challenge: Contractors waste materials and time by relying on files to order, communicate

Many contractors end up wasting materials and time because they rely on static PDFs and Excel files to calculate and communicate their orders to subcontractors and suppliers. But disconnected files can’t keep up with real-time design changes, and contractors must repeat their work with every new iteration of drawings. Over-ordering leads to wasted materials; under-ordering to project delays. Contractors need a solution that links models to reality, allowing them to pull real-time data from building information models (BIM) to share directly with subcontractors and suppliers.

The Forge Solution: Harvesting BIM data to connect and simplify the procurement process

The solution is Sparkel’s easy-to-use procurement tool, which deploys the Forge Viewer and Model Derivative APIs to extract data from BIM models and display it in a web browser. Data is no longer locked away in desktop files or PDFs. Construction companies can generate orders for materials directly from the information in the BIM model, reducing waste from over-ordering. Suppliers and subcontractors only access the information they need to fulfill an order or produce an estimate. Everything that is designed gets ordered, and the quantities are linked to the design.

The intuitive display of deliverables linked to the model reveals if orders have been missed, saving costs from project delays and rushed deliveries. Project managers can easily spot when site managers have forgotten to hire a subcontractor. And information about contracts, materials, and supplies can be stored back into the BIM model, enabling contractors to hand over a complete digital twin to the building’s owner. Sparkel’s ultimate goal is to enable circularity. With a digital twin holding precise information about building materials, that data can be used to inform material reuse during renovations or demolition.
